Western allies unite to tighten economic pressure on Moscow
WASHINGTON, Sept 9 — U.S. and European Union officials met in Washington this week to coordinate an expanded sanctions strategy targeting Russia, following a surge in military strikes across Ukraine. The talks focused on limiting Moscow’s financial and energy resources to reduce its capacity to sustain the war effort.
The session, held at the U.S. Treasury Department, included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and EU Sanctions Envoy David O’Sullivan. Delegates explored measures to broaden restrictions on Russian oil exports and refining operations, essential to Kremlin revenue, while stressing the need for a unified transatlantic approach to increase the sanctions’ impact.
Trump Indicates Potential “Second Phase”
President Donald Trump, participating remotely, suggested that the U.S. could implement a “second phase” of sanctions. This may involve targeting countries such as India and China that continue to purchase Russian oil, aiming to cut off indirect support for Moscow and reduce its income from energy exports.
EU Prepares 19th Sanctions Package
Simultaneously, the European Union is preparing its 19th round of sanctions, which will focus on Russian banks and energy companies. These measures are designed to further isolate Russia from global financial markets and constrain its ability to export energy, complementing U.S. actions.
Rising Attacks Spur Urgency
The meetings followed Russia’s largest strike on Ukrainian infrastructure so far, involving over 800 drones and 13 missiles hitting more than 30 sites. The assault caused widespread damage and numerous casualties, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to call for stronger international sanctions and increased support.
Looking Ahead
The coordinated U.S.-EU strategy highlights a firm commitment to applying economic pressure in response to Russia’s escalating aggression. While the sanctions’ effectiveness will depend on enforcement and international cooperation, the talks demonstrate a more unified and assertive stance from Western powers amid the ongoing conflict.
