New climate plans from more than 60 countries would cut global carbon emissions by only 10% by 2035, far below what’s needed to limit warming to 1.5C, a UN analysis has found.
UN climate chief Simon Stiell said countries were “making progress” but warned of a “serious need for more speed.” Major emitters including China and the EU have yet to submit updated plans, while Donald Trump has vowed to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement again.
The findings come ahead of Cop30 in Brazil next month, where leaders will discuss how to close the gap between pledges and action. Experts say slow progress from key nations threatens global efforts, despite most of the world now having net zero targets.
