Paris Saint-Germain have secured the Ligue 1 title after a 2-0 win over their closest rivals RC Lens, sealing a record-extending 14th French league championship.
The victory came on Wednesday and ensured PSG finished the season nine points clear at the top with one match still left to play. The team only needed a draw to confirm the title, but delivered a strong performance to close out the race in style.
The win strengthens PSG’s dominance in French football, as they continue their run of five straight Ligue 1 titles. The club has now become the most successful side in the history of the French top flight.
The breakthrough goal came in the 29th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished a well-placed pass after a mistake in the Lens defence.
The move started when Ousmane Dembélé intercepted a loose pass from Lens defender Malang Sarr before setting up the scoring chance.
Lens had several strong chances of their own but failed to convert them into goals.
Their striker Wesley Saïd missed a close-range header in the first half and later fired straight at PSG goalkeeper Matvei Safonov during stoppage time before the break.
In the second half, Lens continued to push forward and came close again when Abdallah Sima broke through on goal, only to be denied by Safonov.
Sima also struck the post later in the match after a strong pass from Florian Thauvin, highlighting Lens’ missed opportunities.
Despite pressure from the home side, PSG remained composed and doubled their lead in stoppage time.
Eighteen-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye scored the second goal, finishing from a pass by Désiré Doué with a powerful strike that went in off the crossbar.
The match had originally been scheduled for April 11 but was moved by the French league to support PSG’s Champions League campaign.
Lens strongly opposed the rescheduling but had no control over the decision.
Lens manager Pierre Sage rotated his squad ahead of their upcoming French Cup final against Nice, resting key attackers until later in the match.
PSG’s league success now shifts attention to their European ambitions.
The club is preparing for a major Champions League final against Premier League leaders Arsenal on May 30 in Budapest.
The result also highlights PSG’s continued strength in domestic football compared to previous seasons, where they often secured the title earlier and with fewer challenges.
This season proved more competitive, but PSG still managed to maintain control during the final stretch.
Lens, meanwhile, remain focused on finishing their season strongly and preparing for their upcoming cup final.
Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Strasbourg recorded a 2-1 win over Brest in a rescheduled match.
Strasbourg took the lead through defender Valentin Barco before Ludovic Ajorque equalised for Brest.
Sebastian Nanasi then scored the winner to secure all three points for Strasbourg in an entertaining match.
As the Ligue 1 season nears its conclusion, PSG’s dominance once again defines the French football landscape, while other clubs continue battling for European qualification and domestic cup success.
