A man has been arrested after three women were injured in a knife attack in Paris on Monday, according to French authorities. The incident took place in the Porte de Clichy district in the northern part of the French capital and triggered a rapid response from police and emergency services.
The attack occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time. Three women aged 19, 24, and 36 were taken to hospital following the assault, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Paris police confirmed.
Officials said two of the victims suffered serious injuries but were not in life-threatening condition. One woman was wounded in the lower back, while another sustained injuries to the abdomen. Authorities have not released detailed information about the condition of the third victim.
Geoffroy Boulard, the mayor of Paris’ 17th district where the attack occurred, said one of the injured women was pregnant. Authorities have not provided further details regarding her condition.
The suspect was quickly detained after the incident. Interior Minister Nunez said the man was stopped by an off-duty police officer, whose actions helped bring the situation under control before additional injuries could occur.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as people nearby reacted to the attack. Kheira Dellabed, a 54-year-old waitress working in the area, said she saw a man carrying two knives and attacking people on the street.
According to her account, a passerby carrying a small suitcase intervened and struck the suspect with the bag, causing him to fall to the ground. She added that a worker from a nearby restaurant then helped restrain the man by placing a chair on him until police arrived.
Emergency responders quickly secured the area and transported the victims to hospital for treatment. Police also established a security perimeter while investigators gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the suspect. Investigators are working to establish his background and determine what led to the attack.
Speaking after the incident, Nunez said the suspect made what he described as “incoherent statements” during his arrest. However, he urged caution and said it was too early to draw conclusions about the motive behind the attack.
